POEM ABOUT CHRIST
A reproduction by Mantegna or Holbein – where the body is like a landscape.
We are accustomed to distorted stories,
To dead appearances, and this landscape is ours.
How we keep crucifying Christ anew,
And read Kazantzakis novel
With passionate haste.
Christ is dead – and that is our flaw.

Möglicherweise ist Der tote Christus oder Cristo in scurto das ungewöhnlichste Werk Mantegnas, das besondere Aufmerksamkeit verdient. Ein kleines Objekt im Hintergrund neben dem Kissen gibt einen Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Gemäldes: es handelt sich um ein Gefäß mit Myrrhe. Möglicherweise wollte Mantegna den Moment der Salbung des toten Körpers nach jüdischer Tradition darstellen, und die Steintafel, auf der der Erlöser liegt, ist eines der wichtigsten Heiligtümer des Christentums, das in Konstantinopel aufbewahrt wurde und nach der Einnahme der Stadt durch die Türken im Jahr 1453 verschwand. Auf ihr wurde der Körper Christi zur Beisetzung vorbereitet.
